Judith Love Cohen, born in 1933, was an American aerospace engineer, author, and advocate for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A trailblazer in every sense, she made significant contributions to the aerospace industry, helped send astronauts to the moon, and inspired countless young minds through her children's books.

A Passion for Problem Solving
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Judith Love Cohen developed a fascination for engineering at an early age. Her love for mathematics and problem-solving led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1957, a time when few women entered the field. Undeterred by societal norms, Cohen embarked on a remarkable journey to break barriers and redefine the role of women in engineering.
An Aerospace Engineering Pioneer
Cohen's career as an aerospace engineer spanned over five decades, during which she contributed to numerous high-profile projects. As one of the few female engineers at the time, she worked for prestigious organizations such as TRW (now Northrop Grumman), NASA, and the U.S. Navy. Cohen's technical expertise led to advancements in the development of several spacecraft, including the Apollo Lunar Module and the Hubble Space Telescope.
Her most notable accomplishment was her work on the Apollo program, where she played a crucial role in designing the Abort Guidance System (AGS) for the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). The AGS was instrumental in ensuring the safe return of the Apollo 13 astronauts, as it allowed the LEM to be used as a "lifeboat" after an explosion on the service module damaged the spacecraft.
Cohen also contributed to the Mars Viking Lander, the science satellite program, and various military projects, leaving an indelible mark on the aerospace industry.

Advocate for Women in STEM
Throughout her career, Judith Love Cohen was a passionate advocate for women in STEM fields. She worked tirelessly to encourage young girls to pursue their interests in science and engineering, often visiting schools to speak about her experiences. Cohen believed that diversity in the workplace, particularly in technical fields, was critical for driving innovation and progress.
In addition to her advocacy work, Cohen co-founded the educational publishing company Cascade Pass with her husband David A. Katz in 1995. The company has published a series of children's books that promote interest in STEM subjects, including "You Can Be a Woman Engineer," which was inspired by Cohen's own experiences. These books have served as valuable resources for children and educators, promoting a positive image of STEM careers for young girls.
