The Polar Express
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is a magical Christmas story about a young boy who’s starting to doubt the existence of Santa Claus. But on Christmas Eve, something extraordinary happens—a mysterious train called the Polar Express pulls up right outside his house, offering him a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the North Pole!
The boy hops aboard (because there is NO adult supervision in his life) and finds himself surrounded by other kids (also parentless), all dressed in their pajamas, as the train speeds through snowy forests, over mountains, and across frozen lakes. The whole ride is an adventure in itself, with hot chocolate, carols, and even a few bumps along the way.
At the North Pole
When they finally reach the North Pole, the boy and the other children witness something incredible—the elves gathering to send Santa off on his Christmas Eve journey. Santa himself chooses one lucky child to receive the first gift of Christmas, and he picks our boy! The boy chooses something simple but meaningful: a silver bell from Santa's sleigh. There’s just one catch—only those who truly believe in Santa can hear its magical jingle.
On the way home, the boy realizes he’s lost the bell, but Christmas morning brings a surprise—Santa has returned the bell, wrapped and waiting under the tree. Though many people, including his parents, can’t hear its sound, the boy can, because he still believes in the magic of Christmas.
Fun Trivia
Trivial fun: Did you know that the author, Chris Van Allsburg, based the look of the North Pole on his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan? Also, the book was turned into an animated movie in 2004, with Tom Hanks playing multiple roles, including the conductor and Santa!
The Polar Express is all about wonder, belief, and the joy of the holiday season, making it a Christmas favorite for both kids and adults alike.
