Art Shows and Hot August Nights
Volume 15 Issue 8, August 2018 Now that it’s hot out, it’s time to move inside and stay out of the oppressive heat and humidity. One of the things we have planned for this month is a show in the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach, FL. It is a monthly artisan show that benefits our No-Kill Shelter: H.A.L.O. and we do try to do a lot to help support them. They were the ones who cut Blu’s hair and let him stay overnight with them when we went on vacation. They also were the ones who we donated a...
Rain and French Bulldogs
Volume 15 Issue 7, July 2018 What's New in July? We are headed into the hot summer months and enjoying a few days of downpours that will keep the ground from drying out and the flowers from wilting. It’s been quiet at the bird feeder, but we still have the regulars popping in for a bite or two before it gets too hot out. The cardinals are our resident clocks. They are here at dawn and the last to leave at night. When the feeder gets low, someone always comes and hops around on the porch railing to let us...
Raccoons and Rain
Volume 15 Issue 6, June 2018 What's New in June? The 2018 Hurricane Season has come in with a named storm a few days before the official start This may be an indication as to how many times I have to evacuate. On the other hand, it might be the only showing of the season. It’s never accurate, and it’s never certain. For now, all of my many, many, many flowers are enjoying the fresh God-given rain. Our yard is filled with color, butterflies, birds and bees, so we feel that we have done our part to encourage nature to...
Caterpillars and Worms
Volume 15 Issue 5, May 2018 What's New in May? We have not had any April showers, but we certainly have lots of May flowers. Of course, we have been buying them as they go on sale. Our focus has been on Florida native perennials since they are less difficult to care for and will be the most excellent butterfly magnets! This year, we added an entire section of gazanias that are explosive in color and spread out to cover a larger area. The butterflies just love all of the bright yellow and orange. In addition to the flowers, I...
Wild Turkey and Pollen
Volume 15 Issue 4, April 2018 What's New in April? We’ve been battling pollen and other irritants this year, so been very slow moving when it comes to getting things accomplished; however, that does not mean that I have stopped putting flowers in the ground. No, I am surrounding myself with color this year. I have even seen a couple of Monarch caterpillars poking around in my milkweed, so I expect to see their flashing orange wings dashing across my front yard at some point. In the meantime, I will make do with a wild turkey, a couple of the...
