“What me worry?”
What does MAD magazine have to do with the delightful tale of Frosty the Snowman? It is MAD’s artist, Paul Coker Jr., who draws Frosty to life for the animated Christmas television special that aired for the first time in 1969. This tale gets a bit complicated as it rolls along, but the idea that there is magic at Christmas time is the central theme.
Frosty is the product of kids who couldn’t resist playing in the snow. The kids were at a Christmas party at their school when a really bad magician, Professor Hinkle, tried to pull a rabbit out of a hat. He missed, the rabbit ran away with the hat and all, and the kids were sent out to play while he tried to pull his act together.
The magical hat ended up on the head of the snowman, so Frosty leapt to life. There’s singing in here somewhere too. Frosty comes and goes a lot in this movie as he moves from cold to hot to cold to hot. Sometimes he’s a puddle with a hat sitting in it and sometimes, he’s taking up space on a train. There’s a rabbit – Hocus Pocus – and a little girl by the name of Karen. They all decide that they have to find Santa in order to help Frosty stay frosty, so there’s a trip to the North Pole; the magician turns out to be less than honorable, and the kids need a hero.
The voice of Jimmy Durante as the narrator is the last movie he made, and June Forer is the voice of Karen, her friends and her teacher. She is also the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Cindy Lou Who, Granny from the Tweety and Sylvester cartoons and many other voices from our childhood.
Grab the kids and watch this when it comes around again this year. You probably know the song by heart! Gene Autry had a hit with it!
